A proud native of Portland, Oregon, Steven took pictures for his high school’s yearbook and later worked for his college newspaper at Portland State University. He considered becoming a teacher like his mom, but landed a job at a suburban newspaper in Portland and decided to pursue a career in journalism. It wasn’t until he married and moved with his family to Stuart, Florida, that Steven found his true calling – photography. While Steven has become one of Florida’s top photographers, he has also been sought out by National Geographic and A-list country music stars including Reba, Ronnie Dunn and Clint Black. His pictures appeared as 50-foot murals at the Palm Beach International Airport, and he has traveled across the U.S. and to Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, India, London, Ireland and Ecuador for his work. When not behind the camera, Steven is most often found on his bike. His passion for cycling led him to complete the Tour Divide, a 2,800-mile mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico, and the Trans Am race in which he rode 4,400 miles from Oregon to Virginia. \"My cameras and my bike are part of who I am. In a perfect world, I would be cycling whenever and wherever I could, making gorgeous images along the way.” Steven is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP).

Dan wanted me to travel to Boca Grande, Florida, and spend a week exploring “the best beaches,” not just for their beauty, but for the people who lived alongside them. The drive over the causeway felt like crossing into another world. Boca Grande didn’t announce itself with flashy signs or crowds; it unfolded quietly, with swaying palms and stretches of pale sand that seemed untouched by time. My first morning, I woke before sunrise and walked out to the beach with my camera. The Gulf was calm, almost glassy, and the sky shifted from lavender to gold in slow, deliberate strokes. It wasn’t just beautiful—it felt intimate, like the place was letting me in on a secret. I realized then that this assignment wasn’t just about scenery. It was about noticing. By the second day, I started talking to people. There was a fisherman at Whidden's that had worked there for decades, hands weathered like driftwood. He told me about tarpon season, about storms that reshaped the shoreline overnight, about how the beach wasn’t something you owned—it was something you respected. Later, I went to a small café tucked behind a row of sea grapes. Talked about the rhythm of the island, how visitors came and went, but the tide—and the community—remained steady. Each conversation added a layer to the place, turning it from a postcard into a living story. Midweek, I rented a bike and followed a narrow path that wound along the coast. I stopped wherever the light caught my attention: dunes dotted with sea oats, shells scattered like confetti, a lone heron standing perfectly still at the water’s edge. I filled pages of my notebook, not just with descriptions, but with feelings I didn’t yet know how to articulate. There was a quietness to Boca Grande that challenged me. It wasn’t dramatic or loud. It didn’t demand to be photographed. It asked to be understood. On my last evening, I sat on the beach as the sun slipped beneath the horizon, thinking about the images ive created. I had come expecting to capture “the best beaches,” but what I found was something harder to define. It was the stories, the hush of the tide at dawn. Accepting that assignment had felt like a leap into the unknown, but now it felt like an invitation—to slow down, to listen, to see beyond the obvious. As the sky darkened and the first stars appeared, I realized the real story wasn’t just about Boca Grande. It was about learning how to truly arrive somewhere, and letting it change you.
